The two came from different backgrounds, the princess from a very regal family, Her father was renown for the red horses he stabled The squire was, like his father before, training to be a warrior.

One summer the princess and the squire met by chance. Or was it by magic? They both were drawn to each other by a magic spell of music and song. They spent the evening discussing the magic that was weaving a spell of love around them. T’was powerful this magic. It confused the squire as he had not felt this way before. So he sought the counsel of a wise Wizard, skilled in the ways of magic.

“What is this I feel, wise Wizard?” “It is love.” replied the Wizard. “But I see dark clouds on the edges of this magic. Do not love this maiden, as she will bring pain to you in the form of a broken heart.”

“Nay, Wizard!” “You speak not the truth. For I truly love the princess, and she loves me.”

“In her eyes, I see the sparkle of a thousand stars shining for me.”

“In her touch, I receive the caress of a thousand massages.”

“In her heart, I feel the love of a thousand lovers.”

“In her laughter, I hear the song of a thousand sultry sirens.”

“Tell me wizard that this is not my destiny to love her as much.” “Yes,” said the Wizard. “It is your destiny to love her as much, but the path your heart travels is a treacherous way. Be true to your love and you will be happy.”

With this message, the young squire accepted the advances of the princess. Such was their love that it was sure to last through the ages. The princess and the squire had beautiful dreams of a large family and wealth. With this commitment, they approached her father the king for permission to marry.

The king and queen were pleased with the choice of the young squire as the husband of the princess. They saw in him, the shadow of the king. For once the king had been a warrior. The king proclaimed that there would be made a wonderful belt, constructed of four rings of gold for the couple. He commissioned a goldsmith to construct it.

At the wedding, the king presented his gift to the squire and his daughter. He explained the four rings were romance, trust, honor and communication. For the belt to be strong, all four rings had to be strong. For if one ring was weak then the belt was only as strong as that link. “The marriage,” he said, “was like this belt. If any one of these rings were weak then the marriage would be as well. Guard the belt and the marriage well. Let them not weaken.”

The squire became a warrior and set off to protect the land from enemies foreign and domestic. His princess by his side, they traveled the world. Happy in the thought, that they were together. But alas, they failed to heed the message of the king. In the interest of protecting the world, the warrior let slip his guarding of the belt and the marriage. The ring of communication began to tarnish and as warned, the belt began to weaken. The princess tried to restore the luster, but the attempt reduced the strength of the ring of trust. Soon the belt and the marriage were weakened beyond belief. The warrior, and the princess, lost in their thoughts of themselves had given up the thoughts of them together, and the wise wizard’s warning finally came true.

“Don’t mess with this maiden as she will only break your heart.”

I’m an occasional writer, learning to express my life experiences in verse.
